At least a dozen studies indicate that oral supplementation with collagen supports skin, joint, and bone health plus lean body mass.

Supports Skin Health. Collagen peptide supplements may help slow skin aging by reducing wrinkles and dryness. The wrinkle-reducing effects of collagen supplements have been attributed to their ability to stimulate the body to produce collagen on its own.  Additionally, taking collagen supplements may promote the production of other proteins that help structure the skin, including elastin and fibrillin.

Supports Joint Health. Taking collagen supplements may help improve symptoms of osteoarthritis and reduce joint pain overall. Researchers have theorized that supplemental collagen may accumulate in cartilage and stimulate tissues to make collagen.  Scientists have suggested this may lead to lower inflammation, better support of the joints and reduced pain.

Supports Bone Health. Collagen supplements may have certain effects in the body that help inhibit the bone breakdown that leads to osteoporosis.

Supports Lean Body Mass. Studies suggest that collagen supplements help boost muscle mass in people with sarcopenia, (the loss of muscle mass that happens with age).  Researchers have suggested that taking collagen may promote the synthesis of muscle proteins such as creatine, and may also stimulate muscle growth after exercise.

FAQs

1. What is Collagen?

A fibrous protein that builds strength and structure in the body; collagen is the most abundant protein in the body.  Although there are more than a dozen types, 80 – 90 percent of collagen in the body consists of types I, II, and III.

2. Why Take a Collagen Supplement?

Fibrous type collagen molecules are twisted and packed together to form long thin fibrils. Collagen is destroyed during inflammatory processes that involve bones, joints, cartilage, and other connective tissue.  Taking a collagen supplement helps to provide the body with the nutrients it needs to build new collagen.

3. What is the Difference Between Collagen & Whey Protein?

Both collagen and whey are proteins, but their source is different and as a result, their amino acid profile differs.  Whey is derived from milk whereas collagen is derived from bones, skins & cartilage of animals (chicken, porcine, bovine, fish).  Whey protein is a fast-digesting, complete protein that contains branched chain amino acids (BCAAs).  BCAAs (a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine) are key amino acids the body needs for building muscle.  Collagen, which is rich in several amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxylysine and hydroxyproline), is used to build tendons, ligaments, cartilage, muscle, skin, hair, and nails.
